Lucknow on the Global Plate: Awarded UNESCO’s City of Gastronomy
The Aroma of kebabs drifting through Aminabad, the clinking of kulhads filled with steaming chai, and the golden crust of sheermal fresh out of the tandoor- Lucknow isn’t just a city; it’s an experience. And now, that experience has found its place on the global map. On October 31, 2025, UNESCO officially recognized Lucknow as a Creative City of Gastronomy, acknowledging the city’s deep rooted culinary traditions and vibrant food culture.
A Taste of
Heritage
For centuries, Lucknow has been celebrated as
the legacy of Awadhi cuisine-a legacy born in the royal kitchen of Nawabs.
Every dish tells a story of patience and perfection. From the melt-in-the-mouth
Tunday Kebabs and rich Galouti Kebabs to the aromatic Awadhi
Biryani and delicate Sheermal, the city’s food isn’t merely prepared;
it’s crafted with emotions and history.
Walking through the narrow lanes of Chowk or Aminabad
will make you feel that food isn’t being made for fame, but for love. Recipes
are like patronage – guarded, cherished, perfected through generations. The concept
of ‘dum’ cooking, where dishes are slow-cooked in sealed pots, captures
the very essence of Lucknow- calm, graceful, and full of depth.
What the UNECSO Title means
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network brings
together more than 350 cities worldwide that use creativity to drive sustainable
urban development. Under the Gastronomy category, cities are honored preserving
their culinary heritage, promoting food tourism, and empowering local communities.
Lucknow now joins Hyderabad as the only two Indian cities with this recognition.
This title means more than global prestige – it’s
a promise to protect what Lucknow special. It celebrates the city’s balance
between royal heritage and humble street food between the grandeur of Mughlai
dishes and the simplicity of chaat sold by local vendors.
Opportunities Beyond the Title
With this recognition comes a world of
opportunity. Lucknow’s food scene is expected to witness a surge in food tourism,
attracting both Indian and international visitors. It opens doors for culinary
exchanges, chef collaborations, and cultural festivals celebrating Awadhi cuisine.
More importantly, it can uplift local communities.
The UNESCO tag has the potential to strengthen livelihoods, encourage
sustainable practices and position Lucknow as a global culinary hub.
A Flavor That Lasts
Lucknow’s UNESCO’S recognition isn’t just a moment of pride- it’s a milestone in India’s cultural story. It’s a proof that tradition, when nurtured with heart, can travel beyond borders.
